Long-term Outcomes of Adult and Pediatric Liver TransplantationFriday, October 30
7:55am – 3:15pm
Course Directors:
Sandy Feng, MD, PhD Jan Lerut, MD, PhD
Improvements in transplantation medicine and surgery have led to a steep increase in the number surviving liver transplant recipients. The goal of this AASLD/ILTS course is to comprehensively inform transplant professionals regarding the long-term issues and consequences of liver transplantation. Much of this course content will reflect recently available data with a focus on four primary aspects of long-term post-liver transplant outcomes:
- long-term benefits of liver transplantation
- 'natural' evolution of specific liver diseases after successful transplantation;
- psychosocial and economic impact of long-term survival after liver transplantation;
- impact of liver transplantation and the attendant immunosuppression on other organ systems.
Goals and Objectives:
- Critically evaluate the real benefit of liver transplantation for both adult and pediatric recipients.
- Anticipate the variable presentation of allograft disease, both recurrent and de novo, and adapt therapeutic interventions appropriately.
- Appreciate the physical and psychosocial impact of liver transplantation and their evolution over the medium- and long-term.
- Develop a strategy to monitor for, diagnose, and manage medical co-morbidities as they develop in the long-term liver transplant recipient.
- Identify strategies to prevent the development of medical co-morbidities.
