State-of-the-Art Lectures

The Leon Schiff State-of-the-Art Lecture*

Goals and Objectives:

• Recoginize the signs and symptoms of acute liver failure (ALF).
• Discuss the varying etiologies of acute liver failure and their differing clinical presentations.
• Be able to plan a workup and considerations for initial treatment and for transplantation.
• Understand issues surrounding determination of prognosis and outcomes in ALF.

The Leon Schiff State-of-the-Art Lecture honors Dr. Schiff and recognizes the work he did to elevate the study and practice of hepatology to the discipline it is today.  The restricted fund supporting this lecture ensures that future hepatologists will have a district platform from which to provide their valuable insights at The Liver Meeting®.  AASLD greatly acknowledges the National Genetics Institute for its generous support of this fund.

The Thomas E. Starzl Transplant Surgery State-of-the-Art Lecture*

Goals and Objectives:

• Review clinical and animal transplant models of liver-related tolerance.
• Examine possible mechanisms to explain tolerance induced by the liver.
• Propose potential clinical scenarios for application of liver tolerance.

Hymann J. Zimmerman Hepatotoxicity State-of-the-Art Lecture *

Goals and Objectives:

• Describe how manipulation of genetic circuits controlled by nuclear receptors can alter metabolism leading to new ways to control obesity and enhance physical performance.

Hans Popper Basic Science State-of-the-Art Lecture *

Goals and Objectives:

• Present a synthesis of the remarkable recent discoveries of the various roles of small RNAs in normal and disease processes.
• Outline the potential development of small RNAs as therapeutic agents to modify disease processes.

The Hans Popper Basic Science State-of-the-Art lecture recognizes Hand Popper, the founder of AASLD, his role in the establishment of the AASLD journal HEPATOLOGY, and his promotion of the intellectual spirit of the Association.
