The AASLD NP/PA Clinical Hepatology Fellowship program provides salary and benefit support for certified and licensed Physician Assistants (PA) or Nurse Practitioners (NP) pursuing a full-year of training focused on clinical care in hepatology and is designed to:

  • Increase the number of mid-level practitioners in clinical hepatology.
  • Facilitate the transition (or shift in emphasis) into clinical hepatology for mid-level practitioners.
  • Increase access for liver disease patients to adequately trained clinicians.

The recipients of the 2010 AASLD NP/PA Clinical Hepatology Fellowship prog
ram are:

Ms. Parminder Kaur
Parminder K. Bath Sohal, BSN, MSN, CRNP
, sponsored by Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and mentored by Dr. Victor Navarro.  Mrs. Bath Sohal began her nursing career in oncology.  It was during her practical training as a Nurse Practitioner student that she was first exposed to hepatology and liver transplantation.  The experience had such an impact that she changed focus from oncology to pursue advanced training in hepatology.  Mrs. Bath Sohal’s ambition is to cultivate an outpatient practice concentrating on the treatment of viral hepatitis and hepatocellular cancer, in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team whose purpose is comprehensive care of patients with liver disease.

Mr. Dustin LatimerDustin Latimer, PA-C,
sponsored by Drexel University College of Medicine and mentored by Dr. David A. Sass.  It was during Mr. Latimer’s first career in social services that he first began to develop an interest in the study of liver disease.  The primary factor drawing him to become a mid-level provider was the profession’s patient-centered approach and focus on working with underserved populations.  Mr. Latimer hopes to extend his role as a mid-level practitioner to transplant hepatology, HIV/HCV co-infection, and the management of all forms of acute and chronic liver disease.  His ultimate goal is to develop early interventions emphasizing the role of preventative medicine for viral hepatitis, NAFLD and HCC screening, and eventually educate future generations in the field of clinical hepatology.

Ms. Ashley Reiter
Ashley Reiter, MSN, CRNP
, sponsored by the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and mentored by Dr. K. Rajender Reddy.  Ms. Reiter began her nursing career in gastroenterology when she first had the opportunity to care for patients with liver disease.  As she learned more about the severity and major health concerns surrounding HCV despite novel interferons and the promise of new line therapies, she was drawn to the field of hepatology.  Ms. Reiter intends to give back to the nursing and medical community through lectures, publications and liver disease research.  Her ultimate career objective is the establishment of a nurse practitioner and physician assistant driven hepatology clinic.
