The AASLD Career Development Award in Liver Transplantation in Memory of the University of Michigan Transplant Team is intended to foster career development for an individual performing clinical and/or translational research in the field of liver transplantation and who has shown commitment to excellence in the field at an early stage of his or her career. The award is designed to support a junior faculty member in the development of liver transplant research so that further funding can be obtained.
The 2010 recipient of the AASLD Career Development Award in Liver Transplantation is Dr. Todd V. Brennan sponsored by Duke University Medical Center for his research project entitled Regulation of Alloreactive T Lymphocytes by the Innate Immune System. Dr. Brennan became interested in research early in his career. His laboratory experience in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School sparked a desire to become a transplant surgeon with a strong understanding of alloimmunity. Through his research, Dr. Brennan hopes to improve our understanding of the molecule events that ultimately lead to immune-mediated graft destruction and to translate this research into clinical application.
The 2009 recipient of the AASLD Career Development Award in Liver Transplantation is Dr. Johnny C. Hong, sponsored by the University of California, Los Angeles for his research project entitled Regulated Reperfusion: A Novel Strategy to Mitigate Hepatic Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury in a Swine Model. After starting surgical training at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute in the Philippines, Dr. Hong moved to Houston to complete his general surgery residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center. He then relocated to the Dumont-UCLA Transplant Center where he conducted a clinical fellowship in multi-organ transplantation under the mentorship of Dr. Ronald W. Busuttil. To further his research interest and focus on transplant biology and the rational design of novel strategy and techniques to improve the lives of organ recipients and patients with liver disease, Dr. Hong - under the sponsorship of Dr. Ana J. Coito - will be studying one of the critical barriers in the progress of liver transplantation: hepatic ischemia and reperfusion injury.
