The AASLD Advanced/Transplant Hepatology Fellowship program provides salary and benefit support for GI fellows pursuing an additional, full-year of training focused on patient care in advanced/transplant hepatology. The intent of the program is to prepare the trainee to be eligible for certification in transplant hepatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and/or the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP).
The 2010 recipients of the AASLD Advanced/Transplant Hepatology Fellowship program are:

Dr. Kathleen E. Corey,
sponsored by Massachusetts General Hospital and mentored by Dr. Raymond T. Chung. The major focus of her research has been the interaction between hepatitis C infection and lipid metabolism. Dr. Corey is focused on learning the clinical art of transplant hepatology while simultaneously developing a future academic career in the study of lipid metabolism and viral hepatitis.

Dr. Janice H. Jou, sponsored by Duke University and mentored by Dr. Andrew J. Muir. Her primary area of research is hepatocellular carcinoma, in particular the potential for liver transplantation as a curative treatment of the cancer and underlying liver disease. Dr. Jou’s fellowship period will focus on refining the skills necessary to evaluate and manage the pre-transplant, peri-transplant and post-transplant patient and developing expertise as a transplant hepatologist and outcomes researcher.

Dr. Howard Masuoka, sponsored by the Mayo Clinic Rochester and mentored by Dr. Gregory Gores and Dr. John Poterucha. Dr. Masuoka’s background in basic research will provide a unique perspective and additional tools in understanding and treating liver disease throughout his fellowship period. His focus throughout the year will be on understanding the pathophysiology of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and improving the outcomes following liver transplantation.

Dr. Elizabeth Verna, sponsored by Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and mentored by Dr. Robert S. Brown, Jr. Having trained in a rigorous medical residency and gastroenterology fellowship at Columbia University, she is committed to a career in academic transplant hepatology and clinical research. Dr. Verna intends to continue contributing to the field of transplant hepatology through patient care and clinical investigation, with a specific focus on viral hepatitis.
