Internists and subspecialists certified in 1990 or later (1987 for critical care medicine and 1988 for geriatric medicine) are required to complete the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Qualified ABIM diplomats are expected to complete 100 points of self-evaluation of practice performance. Every ten years doctors are expected to verify that they posses a valid unrestricted license to practice medicine, complete self-evaluation programs, and complete a secure examination.
Requirements for Maintenance of Certification
1. Verify your credentials
You must possess a valid and unrestricted license to practice medicine. If you have a history of substance abuse, you must verify at least one year of continuous sobriety.
2. Complete the self-evaluation requirement
You must earn a total of 100 points of self-evaluation in medical knowledge and practice performance.
ABIM offers Practice Improvement Modules® (PIM) in support of MOC. PIMs are web-based tools that guide physicians through the collection of patient data to identify gaps in care and ultimately implement a quality improvement plan for their practice. Find the best PIM options for you.
3. Pass the secure exam in your discipline
