The Henry M. and Lillian Stratton
Basic Research Single Topic Conference

Mitochondria and Hepatotoxicity
Friday June 8 - Saturday June 9, 2012
Emory Conference Center Hotel – Atlanta, GA

Course Directors: Neil Kaplowitz, MD, Hartmut W. Jaeschke, PhD and John J. Lemasters, MD, PhD

Description
This Single Topic Conference will bring together 150-250 scientists working on the basic and clinical aspects of hepatotoxicity. The focus of the meeting will be on how mitochondrial dysfunction in the context of other cellular and subcellular events contributes to hepatic pathobiology leading to apoptotic and necrotic cell death. The mechanistic actions of a wide variety of toxicants will be considered, ranging from acetaminophen to antivirals to fatty liver disease. Recent developments in the field will be emphasized. Attendees will include both basic and clinical investigators. Junior investigators and pre- and post-doctoral trainees will be encouraged to attend.

Goals and Objectives:

  • New approaches to assess and screen mitochondrial function in vivo and in vitro
  • Types of mitochondrial dysfunction that can contribute to toxicity
  • Relation of mitochondrial dysfunction to other cellular events, such as protein kinase cascades, oxidative stress, signal transduction, etc.
  • Generation of interest by junior investigators in hepatic pathophysiology
