Message from AASLD President Arun Sanyal on HBV & HCV: America’s Hidden Epidemics
|

Dear fellow AASLD member,

I am extremely pleased to announce the publication of the report HBV & HCV: America’s Hidden Epidemics, written by AASLD and the Trust for America’s Health (TFAH). The report maintains and builds on the momentum created by the IOM Report Hepatitis and Liver Cancer: A National Strategy for Prevention and Control of Hepatitis B and C, which was published on January 11, 2010. The new TFAH report keeps liver patients front and center as it focuses our efforts in the policy arena, providing a clear path for attacking the HBV and HCV epidemics.

This is not the first you have heard about this, since I have written to you before about this issue in eNews columns. It has only been, however, a few short months between the publication of these two reports--the IOM report that defines the problem and the TFAH report that provides solutions to that problem. I am proud of how quickly AASLD responded to the IOM report and seized the moment for the advancement of our field and the betterment of patients with liver disease.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Robert P. Perrillo, MD, and W. Ray Kim, MD, for their efforts on behalf of AASLD as representatives to the working group created by TFAH. Their contributions added tremendously to the value of the report.

Please take a few moments and review the TFAH report.

Sincerely,
Arun Sanyal, MD
AASLD President
