As we approach 60 years of service and support to the field of hepatology, our commitment grows to increase opportunities for research, training, and study of liver disease. Faced with declining industry and government support for research and training, AASLD leaders recognized the need to shore up its own funding to support hepatologists. As an organization, we feel a deep obligation to serve as a resource for those interested in furthering the study of liver diseases. It is our desire to support new research, to attract and retain emerging practitioners in the field, and to support the free flow of ideas, which has led us to launch our campaign.
New Challenges -- New Solutions seeks to raise a minimum of $5,000,000 in endowment funds to support research and educational initiatives for the hepatology field, providing permanent funds for Career Development Awards, Advanced/Transplant Hepatology Fellowships, and Single Topic Conferences. Our campaign goals breakdown as follows:
Career Development Awards-Liver Scholars: $3,000,000
The AASLD Research and Fellowship Awards have supported $14,000,000 in research and career development for more than 200 recipients engaged in the development and application of new therapies and improved treatment options for the millions of patients with liver disease.
Advanced/Transplant Hepatology Fellowships: $1,000,000
Since its inception in 2000, more than 100 Fellows have participated in the Advanced/Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program; approximately 80% of whom have remained in hepatology, are active members of the Association, and are prominent leaders in the field.
Single Topic Conferences: $1,000,000
AASLD is unique in our ability to bring together far-flung fields of study to consider avenues of research and synergies of study in single diseases. Each year, we aim to sponsor three to five Single Topic Conferences in clinical research, basic research, hepatitis, pediatric hepatology, and endpoints in clinical trials.
